On Tuesday 19 February, our IGCSE, AS and A Level Geography students were privileged to receive a guest lecture from Dr. Mark Hampton from the University of Kent. Mark is a development Geographer researching tourism for poverty alleviation and having worked across South East Asia in Malaysia, Myanmar and Indonesia, was able to offer a fascinating insight into the positives and negatives of tourism in the region – key components of the IGCSE and A Level courses. Such expertise is essential for furthering our students’ knowledge outside of their usual curriculum and they were fascinated at the
parallels drawn between Ngapali beach in Myanmar and Indonesia’s tourism problems. Mark’s assertion that Bali is in danger of being ‘loved to death’ by tourists was a telling insight into an industry that many of our students may work in once they leave their education at Dyatmika and beyond. Mark was also able to offer insight into University life in the UK and promote the University of Kent’s new Human Geography course – a relevant course for our current students to understand the complexities of the world around them.

A big thank you to Mark and also our superb students who offered some intriguing questions for him to answer!
