On Monday, 29 April, Class 6, 7 and 8 students were very fortunate to be able to watch a play called Orpheus.
The performance reenacted the Greek myth of Orpheus, the story of a lonely musician finding and losing love, with a modern twist.
In this version – written and performed by Alexander Wright and Phil Grainger – the main character is now called Dave and he falls in love with a young woman named Eurydice. The start of the play depicts him as someone different from all the other kids in his life, never really feeling like he belonged. Later in the story, he changes. He gives up on his passion for music and while he gains friends, his life becomes literally colourless. All the beautiful colours of his life turn to various shades of grey until he meets Eurydice at a karaoke bar. As Eurydice made her way into the bar, the narrator (Dave) describes her as a barrage of blues and yellows. Dave saw colours for the first time in years. Soon, they fell deeply in love with each other and arrange to get married. But disaster strikes…
After the show, the performers were presented with a painting of Orpheus made by a Dyatmika student as a token of gratitude. A few lucky students were chosen to participate in a workshop where we practised acting with some fun games and icebreakers. In conclusion, the show and workshop were very simple with only two actors but well executed. We had a great time watching the performance and hope that one day Phil and Alexander will return.
