Our class visited the Kevala Ceramics factory on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. Kevala Ceramics specialise in producing hand-made ceramics for clients such as restaurants, hotels or for quality home decor. We were warmly greeted by Ibu Wendy Thomas, the founder of Kevala, who took us on a tour through the new, large premises. We started at the complex machinery needed to produce the clay used to make the ceramics and then progressed through the many other stages of production; spinning the clay on a potter’s wheel, painting the designs, baking in the kilns and the final quality inspection and packing.

We also visited the research and development department where testing is undertaken to ensure that the most durable and safe stonewear is produced, and the design department where artists drew 3D models and carefully analysed the weight, volume, density and other factors that guarantee a world class ceramic. It was also in this department that employees created innovative new models, textures and colours which ensures that they are always ahead of their competitors.

After the tour we were kindly treated to food and drinks and had the opportunity to ask Ibu Wendy questions about her business. We learnt how she started the business and how it has grown into the successful business it is today, employing over 100 workers. She also introduced us to a number of her staff who explained what their role was at Kevala, including the sales coordinator and the senior designer.

From the visit Class 9 Economics gained an understanding of how the theory learned in class can be applied outside of the classroom. Thank you to Ibu Wendy and all the staff at Kevala Ceramics for providing us with such an interesting experience.
