Last term, Class 8 studied poetry. We looked into various different poems and poets. These included John Hegley’s Poem de Terre, Carol Ann Duffy’s Valentine Jessie Pope’s Who’s for The Game, W. H. Auden’s Funeral Blues and Grace Nichol’s Praise Song for My Mother. We deepened our understanding of poems by even writing our own poems (metaphor poems, recipe poems and performance poems).

We were asked to write a poem, but not any poem; a blackout poem! A blackout poem is a style of poetry you make with an established text and a black marker. We modify the text to choose the words we want for our poem, “blacking” out words that are not going to be used in the final piece. This means selecting the words that interest you from a newspaper, book, or other printed text. It’s like a visual piece of text! It was really good fun!

We enjoyed making and analysing poems, widening more vocabulary for a deeper understanding to express our writing in a different way and expressing our creativity through poetry.
