Class 7 have recently been studying poetry, learning to both analyse poems written by famous poets and write poetry of their own. Our study began by exploring the ‘Ballad’, a traditional form of narrative poetry that was often set to music and performed. We then moved on to study famous poems that experimented with language and structure, such as ‘Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carroll and ‘The Red Wheelbarrow’ by William Carlos Williams. We ended our study of poetry by looking at the work of contemporary performance poets.
Throughout our study of these famous poems, students were encouraged to write short ‘poetry experiments’ of their own, emulating the work of others and developing the writing of their own poetry. At the end of the unit, the students redrafted these experiments into their own ‘Poetry Anthology’ – a collection of their best poems. Both Pak Dika and myself were delighted with the quality of the work students produced in their anthologies and would like to congratulate them on their creativity and dedication to producing excellent poetry. It turns out that there are many budding young poets in Class 7! There were so many examples of outstanding work, but I would particularly like to praise Rachel in 7Y, along with Karen and Naia in 7X. A sample from each of their poetry anthologies is presented below.
