Last week, Dyatmika students enjoyed a range of activities to raise awareness of Climate Change Week. Guest speakers spoke in Google Meets; a competition and treasure hunt were held.
Climate change is defined as the change in the normal condition of a region that includes the rise of temperature, rise of sea levels, shrinking ice glaciers, and changes in plant life cycles. Climate change began because of the industrial revolution (late 1800s). Urbanization meant people created more factories, cities and transportation.
Climate change has been a paramount topic for years and has become a global issue. With deforestation, pollution, overuse of plastic, and other environmental problems, it is no doubt that Earth is slowly being destroyed. To overcome this issue, we must understand what it is, the negative impacts, how we can prevent it, and what will happen if we don’t take action.
Many factors affect climate change, including the greenhouse effect. Different types of gasses are produced as a result of humans burning fuel. These gasses emerge up to the Earth’s atmosphere, blocking heat from escaping our Earth. This is called ‘the greenhouse effect’.
Every living being will be in danger. Currently, the Earth is already displaying the effects of climate change in ways such as sea-level rise, coral degradation, flooding, heatwaves, loss of wildlife habitat, and extinct species. By 2035, the Arctic may no longer contain any sea ice.
Small actions have significant impacts. Turn lights on only when needed, pick up rubbish, compost, utilise reusable containers, eat ice cream with a cone, donate old clothes, plant trees, and – most importantly – educate others about this urgent issue.
Awareness of climate change needs to be spread. It’s our job to keep the balance of our ecosystem. Humans caused the problem, but we can fix it for future generations. After all, there is no planet B, so please do what you can to help. I hope everyone had a good Climate Change week!
