Indonesia has over 17,000 islands, but in recent years, the image of them have been affected by political tension and terror attacks. Java has spectacular and historical monuments and active volcanoes for you to explore. The famous complex that is considered to be a masterpiece of architecture is the Buddhist complex of Borobudur in Yogyakarta- it was built in the ninth century and filled with levels of galleries, telling the story of Buddha’s past and present lives. Being in the Ring of Fire, Indonesia has more than a hundred volcanoes, 25 of which are active. Mount Merapi is one of the classic volcanoes that can be watched during an eruption and is suitable for hiking. Mount Semeru is the highest mountain on the island, while Mount Papandayan has earned the name of “the forge” because it grumbles so regularly. Not to be forgotten is the island of Krakatau, and Anak Krakatau, which is a new island that has risen after Krakatau’s eruption.

The island of Bali has some of the amazing spiritual-cultural heritage, landscapes and beaches. Bali’s linked to its traditions and spirituality festivals that include dances, crafts and religion. Bali’s landscape is so picturesque with the green rice fields and volcanic soil have shaped Bali into an artistic masterpiece. The beaches in the South like Kuta, Legian and Sanur show strong Western influences and are a long way from being deserted. They have been joined by new resorts like Nusa Dua, Tanah Lot and Tuban.

Indonesia has hundreds of beautiful islands but only two became tourists’ favourite destinations, and now you know why. They are serene, beautiful and wonderful islands packed with activities that will keep you energised throughout your vacation.
