Music
Music is a unique art form that touches all of our lives, every day, in some form or another. We, and our children, interact with Music every day from when we awake, whether it’s the latest pop hit waking us up from our phones, TV, radio, or the enchanting sound of the Balinese Gamelan drifting through the air.
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. At Dyatmika we strive to provide a high-quality music education that engages and inspires students to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As students progress, they develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
From Class 1 – 8 our students have two music lessons per week and learn to perform, compose, listen and understand music. With a focus on singing continuing throughout, our students also have a chance to learn many musical instruments in the classroom, whilst having access to our varied peripatetic music system for those who want to take their instrument learning or singing to an even higher level. In the classroom our students learn about Pop, Western Classical and music from different parts of the world through performing, composing and listening activities. By the end of Class 5 we aim for all of our students to be able to read and write music using a variety of notations.
Class 11-12
In Class 11-12, students are able to take Music as an optional subject and follow the Cambridge AS/A Level. Over the two years students learn to:
- develop appreciation of music, through listening, composing and performing
- develop aural appreciation of a variety of Western and non-Western music styles, genres and traditions
- encourage an informed critical response to music
- develop creative and interpretative skills through composing and performing in Western and/or non-Western traditions
- deepen understanding of music in its wider cultural context
- communicate understanding confidently, supporting judgements with evidence-based argument
- develop the skills and understanding needed for the study of music in higher education and/or lifelong learning.
Cambridge International A Level Music provides a foundation for the study of music or related courses in higher education.
Peripatetic Music Programme
Alongside our Music curriculum, our students also have access to individual singing or instrument lessons with our visiting peripatetic music staff. Those students who want to learn to focus on a specific instrument or developing their voices, are able to sign up each semester for a weekly thirty minute individual lesson. The lessons happen within the normal school day, on a rotational timetable so that students don’t miss the same classroom time each week. We currently have students learning guitar, drums, singing, piano, trumpet and trombone. In the near future we hope to offer a full range of woodwind instruments.
